Why Wedding Photos Deteriorate Over Time
Wedding photographs face a unique set of challenges. Many were stored in humid basements, tucked into acidic paper albums, or displayed in direct sunlight for years. The heavy-stock prints popular in the 1960s through 1990s tend to develop a yellowish cast and surface cracking as the emulsion layer dries out. Polaroid-era instant prints from the 1970s and 1980s are especially prone to color shifting, with warm tones collapsing into a muddy orange-brown. Even well-kept negatives can develop fungal spotting if stored in damp conditions. The result is that many families discover their parents' or grandparents' wedding images have quietly degraded beyond what a simple scan can salvage.
